Rating: (1.00/10)

Abstract: This study is a continuation of the development of the “Electronic Mosquito,” a minimally-invasive blood sampling and analysis device. Wireless communication is a pivotal feature of the Electronic Mosquito in terms of usability and future applicability. The present article describes the design process used to construct a working wireless communication link using an established and reliable protocol. The resulting wireless link performed to specifications, with an empirically determined range of about 20 feet. Power consumption analysis indicated that the wireless system could operate for 100 days off of a CR2032 battery without any power control, and likely longer if power management is implemented in the software. The adopted communication protocol also appears to be a likely candidate for the creation of a Personal Area Medical Network standard which could greatly benefit modern medicine as well as the Electronic Mosquito.

GENERALIZED INTERVAL ESTIMATIONS IN DECISION MAKING AND SCENARIO ANALYSIS

Rating: (1.00/10)

Abstract: Main features of a new method of expert knowledge elicitation – method of generalized interval estimations – and peculiarities of its using in decision making are presented. Expert estimation of an analyzed quantitative parameter is defined in the framework of the method by a set of intervals. This set may be shown on a plane (X, Y) by a curvilinear trapezoid. If densities of probability distributions were defined on Y-axis (“weights” of different interval estimations at their set) and on X-axis (for all interval estimations at the set) we received generalized interval estimation (GIE) of the parameter. GIE method may be used at different directions. Firstly, we may reduce GIE to mono-interval estimation averaging distributions on X-axis, taking into account their weights, and use then famous probabilistic methods to analyze problem. The average distribution is in fact a probability mixture of distributions on intervals of their set. Secondly, we may study complete structure of interval estimations that reflects expert knowledge in details. Here we automatically receive for resulting diagrams (X -parameter value, Y - level of probability) such probability distributions that are boundaries of all distributions of GIE (probability tube, or box). Besides we may receive probability distributions for different sections of p-tube both for parameter values and for probability levels and use these curves in the process of decision-making. At last, we may use GIE method as an instrument of scenario analysis in decision-making. Illustrative examples are given in the paper to demonstrate the decision-making, expert knowledge and scenario analysis aspects of the proposed approach.

Rating: (1.00/10)

Abstract: The subsystem of simulation model completion is discussed. This subsystem is one of the components of computer-aided design and simulation system Triad.Net. Triad.Net is dedicated to computer systems design. And it is well-known, that very often investigators do not know about the behavior in details of each component of computer system being under design in the early stages of this process. The paper considers an ontology-based approach for the incomplete simulation model analysis and its automatic completion. A behavior procedure for the undefined element is searched for in special database and included in simulation model. The paper considers the method of model completion, namely, introduces the concept of a “semantic type” and some conditions that should be fulfilled for an appropriate behavior procedure to be chosen. The base ontology of simulation model representation is discussed and the choice of language OWL is explained. The presented example shows the process of simulation model automatic completion, illustrates the use of semantic type and additional conditions. Besides, the paper describes the programming tools which provide an ontology-based automatic completion, presents the semiautomatic completion of partly described simulation model in simulation system Triad and the architecture of the program subsystem being under consideration.

Abstract: In this paper we present different approaches to multi-source data integration for the solution of complex applied problems, in particular flood mapping and vegetation state estimation using satellite, modelling and in-situ data. Since these applications are data- and computation-intensive, we use Grid computing technologies. In such a case computational and informational resources are geographically distributed and may belong to different organisations. For this purpose, we also investigate benefits of different approaches to the integration of satellite-based monitoring systems.

Abstract: Swallowable capsule endoscopy is used for non-invasive diagnosis of some gastrointestinal (GI) organs. However, control over the position of the capsule is a major unresolved issue. This study presents a design for steering the capsule based on magnetic levitation. The levitation is stabilized with the aid of a feedback control system and diamagnetism. Peristaltic and gravitational forces to be overcome were calculated. A levitation setup was built to analyze the feasibility of using Hall Effect sensors to locate the in-vivo capsule. CAD software Maxwell 3D (Ansoft, Pittsburgh, PA) was used to determine the dimensions of the resistive electromagnets required for levitation and the feasibility of building them was examined. Comparison based on design complexity was made between positioning the patient supinely and upright.

HARDWARE IMPLEMENTATIONS OF VIDEO WATERMARKING
By: Li et al.  (4240 reads)
Rating: (1.00/10)

Abstract: Digital watermarking (WM) is the process that embeds an additional, identifying message called a watermark into a host multimedia object, such as audio, image or video for authentication purpose. Recently, digital WM technique, an information hiding technique has been investigated as one of the key authentication methods to maintain authenticity and security of multimedia content. By adding a transparent watermark to the multimedia content, it can be possible to make any malicious alteration detected to verify the integrity and the ownership of the digital media. During the last several years various WM techniques for still image have been extensively invented for software implementations due to the low data rate of these signals. Although the software approach holds an advantage of flexibility, certain computational restrictions may arise when attempting to operate at video rate or in portable devices. The hardware-level design offers several distinct advantages over the software implementation in terms of lower power consumption, reduced area and reliability. Therefore, there is a strong motivation for a move toward the hardware-based implementation for digital video WM system. In order to give a help for future related research works, this paper presents an up to date overview of digital video WM techniques and discusses the important considerations involving in designing VLSI architecture for a novel WM system in many ways. First of all, it goes through a brief survey on WM theory, laying out common classification criterions, discussing the properties of video WM techniques including the specific requirements as well as the comparison to image WM schemes. Various applications of video WM in practice are discussed. Since each WM application has its own specific requirements, WM design must take the intended application into account. Furthermore, the features of video WM implementations in software and hardware and comparison on those two approaches are presented from several points of view: major advantages, drawbacks and differences through the description of several examples of previous works. In addition, a versatile development methodology for hardware WM implementation including the general scheme of a proposed digital video WM system and testing using the custom breadboard are described.

Abstract: The problem of a semantic gap between multimedia content and its textual annotation defined by user is urgent. This paper presents the combined approach to presentation of multimedia semantics which is based on aggregation of several multimedia that are similar by content and textual annotations into the classes. Such classes will contain generalized descriptions of objects and links reflected in the multimedia, and keywords from some thesaurus. To create and update these classes we also describe the hierarchical clustering and machine learning operations. This approach should expand the multimedia search and navigating area due to including the media documents with similar content and text descriptions.

Rating: (1.00/10)

Abstract: Methods of creation and development of distributed information systems dynamically adapted to varying requirements of users and service conditions are considered. Described means are based on use of multilevel models. These models represent various parties of system functioning and system domain with various levels of abstraction and from different points of view. System functioning is based on the models interpretation. This approach is realized in the CASE-technology METAS intended for maintenance of all life cycle of dynamically adaptable systems. The basic levels of the system description are the logical level (the system objects description with data domain terms), the physical level (the description of data presentation in a database) and the presentation level (the description of user interface). All models can be changed during system functioning. New models can be developed on the basis of these models. Now the model of reporting, the Web-model and the business-processes model are created. Adaptation possibilities are based on various means of model development such as language toolkit, tools of data re-structuring, means of generation and adjustment of user interface and so on. Software tools of external data import, means of replication of data and models, tools of program components integration and document management subsystem are included in CASE-system too. This technology is based on DSM and DSL: domain specific languages are used as tools for development of domain models. Objects attributes, operations and business rules are described via DSL. The language toolkit is used for DSL creation. It is the base for the multilevel metamodelling. In such a way development of DSL for the specific domain is the first step of information system creation.

Rating: (1.00/10)

Abstract: The paper develops and illustrates an approach to transformation of information represented as graph structures. It also provides the conceptual information transformation system based on mapping of graph structures. The system comprises three levels which makes it possible to adapt the transformer to information of different domains. Each level has its own models for describing information and specifying ways of its transformation. The transformer can operate with both structural and textual representations of information. The paper describes the general architecture of the transformer and its components. It offers models describing graph structures and mappings which are specifications for graph transformation. It also exemplifies descriptions of graph structures and syntax restrictions which are imposed on the former. The paper provides a fragment of description of one mapping of graph structure on the other. This approach is implemented in the prototype that ensures program translation from one procedural programming language into another. The prototype supports such languages as Pascal, C, languages of structure program models and is developed within the framework of the program transformation system. The prototype is implemented in the Java programming environment.

Abstract: Linguistic theory, cognitive, information, and mathematical modeling are all useful while we attempt to achieve a better understanding of the Language Faculty (LF). This cross-disciplinary approach will eventually lead to the identification of the key principles applicable in the systems of Natural Language Processing. The present work concentrates on the syntax-semantics interface. We start from recursive definitions and application of optimization principles, and gradually develop a formal model of syntactic operations. The result – a Fibonacci-like syntactic tree – is in fact an argument-based variant of the natural language syntax. This representation (argument-centered model, ACM) is derived by a recursive calculus that generates a mode which connects arguments and expresses relations between them. The reiterative operation assigns primary role to entities as the key components of syntactic structure. We provide experimental evidence in support of the argument-based model. We also show that mental computation of syntax is influenced by the inter-conceptual relations between the images of entities in a semantic space. This work represents a further step in the formal description of the observed syntax-semantics dependencies. The assumption is made that the syntax-semantic interface is best explained as a particular operation, Merge that applies at both semantic and syntactic levels. The resulting formal description of the stages of syntactic treatment complies with the results of the experiment. A formal model of syntactic operations is developed starting from recursive definitions and application of optimization principles. The result – a Fibonacci-like syntactic tree – is in fact an argument-based variant of the natural language syntax.
